CLOVERFIELD


I dare to give it WooooW (4.0/5)

TONS of people are going to hate this movie because of the ending. So many movies must've suffered this fate: think The Village, Secret, The Banquet, Just Follow Law etc...

But for me, this movie was different. Even though the ending was undeniably WHAT-THE-$#%@, but the journey was good enough. Bloody good enough.

What's It About:
This movie project has been shrouded in secrecy for at least 2 years... and that's the reason why it was so freakin' highly-anticipated. But Nobody knew what it was going to be about. Just that it was a monster movie, and from the trailer we catch just a glimpse of a gigantic leg, and the poster showed Statue of Liberty with her head whacked-off.

Just let me say first: the entire movie is filmed on a hand-held camera (like The Blair Witch Project). But it is what makes the movie so good. It starts with a normal farewell party for a guy at an apartment with a bunch of friends. A relationship problem crops up, and while they were talking 'bout it, suddenly WHAM! it all starts. The explosions, and stuff like that. So they try to escape, and at first, they don't know what the hell hit them. The city falls apart (all the while the guy is holding is camera) and finally... we catch a glimpse of it.

There's no stopping after that. The friends try to escape the monster (and its off-springs..yucks), while they search for another pal trapped in her apartment.


Plus-Points:
The gritty, raw and realism of it all shocks the audience and nails the movie. What sets this film apart from other blockbusters and effects-laden movie (think Transformers, I Am Legend, Jurassic Park) is that you get to experience all of it first-hand, without warning, and close-up. The whole cinema was vibrating with the brilliant (and scary) sound effects; visually, it was stunningly terrifying, too.


Flaws:
People who hate this movie (again, because of its ending) are perfectly justified. The movie closed with the biggest questions unanswered: Where the bloody-hell did IT come from? What the bloody-hell is the government going to do about IT? It does seem like laziness on the part of the directors (the film was a mere one-hour plus).

Perhaps filmcritic.com summed it up the best: "Cloverfield is one tight ending shy of being a modern monster masterpiece." But it still gave it 4/5.


Final-Say:
Go watch it 'cos it's different and you'll have a helluva good ride. (Erm, a little warning, it might leave you a little dizzy) Disregard the ending, though. Bleah.

Flying off tomorrow. Don't know what to feel. Half-excited. Half-dread. But it sure is gonna be an experience, no doubt.

The Best Duets

Took half-day off today. Finally sent my duffel bag for Thailand - Exercise Battleking. Quite excited / dreaded about the overseas trip. Only looking forward to returning.. 'cos it'll be CNY!

Side Note: My maid (the very first one, where we are very close to) just called from Philippines. She's returning to work for us! Yesss.

Anyway, back to main topic:
Today dunno why, searched for some videos of old songs and guess what.. decided to compile a list of Best Duets. These are classics.. hope you like them =)

1) When You Believe - Whitney Houston & Mariah Carey

It's from the soundtrack of Prince of Egypt. And it was this song that made me like Mariah Carey =P But undeniably, it's one of the best; two vocal powerhouses singing their lungs out. Terrrrific.


2) Come What May - Ewan McGregor & Nicole Kidman

Who knew these two actors could sing - so well?? From a very good musical, Moulin Rouge, this is very melodic, very undying, very nice.


3) Someday We'll Know - Mandy Moore & Jonathan Foreman

Can anybody tell me where the heck is Mandy Moore now?? She is a singer whose voice I still like till today. This is from the movie A Walk to Remember, which I don't remember watching. But still, nice modern pop duet.


And now, for the real classicssss...

4) I Finally Found Someone - Babra Streisand & Bryan Adams

This has gotta be the most romantic duet ever. Period. From a very old movie, The Mirror Has Two Faces, which also stars Babra Streisand, this is a classic everyone should sing at their wedding =P


5) The Prayer - Celine Dion & Andrea Brocelli

A duet never sounded so angelic. The blind tenor featuring the sweet vocals of Celine. Perfect.


6) All I Ask of You - Cliff Richard & Sarah Brightman

From the original Broadway version of The Phantom of the Opera. Nothing can be said about this song. The best duet Ever.


Yups, I dunno why I'm featuring so many songs lately.

Tomorrow off! Dunno whether to watch Cloverfield or American Gangster. Shall see.

Note-Worthy (1)

Hahahaha.. sorry, I'm still laughing from the after-effects of the previous post. Classic. Want to thank fungi and especially szern for being such sporting ppl.. =) Lamerz really had fun, duncha think so? You guys rock! =D

That aside, this entry is about recent nice songs that I want to introduce!

You know, when you're in the army, sometimes it's so sian until you find yourself sitting down and just listening to your mp3 player for time to past. Well, I do that a lot of time these days. I don't know what I'll do w/o my player!

Shall start off with notable Mandarin ones.

1) 光良 - 烟火









The pop prince who brought us 童话 is back. It has a catchy-chorus which grows on you. It's the sure-work 光良-formula.
I give it WOOOoW (3.5/5)


2) F.I.R ft 信 - 需要你的爱







The explosiveness of this duet between Faye and 信 is what makes this song so memorable. Their power-harmonising is impressive and... just makes people want to go Kbox.
I give it WOOOoW (3.5/5)


3) S.H.E - 你最近还好吗







This song has a melody that forces you to sing along with it whenever it's playing. (I mean it in a good way) SHE is getting better in their harmonising, which is important for this song, and... Hebe rocks. Ok, random =P

4) 周杰伦 - 阳光宅男







It's upbeat, it's catchy, it's cheeky, it's the golden collaboration of 方文山 and 周杰伦. Nothing much can go wrong. This single simply.. rocks.

5) 范玮琪 - 是非题







I really really really like this song. It's a simple love song: a great, stirring melody + meaningful lyrics. 范范's voice added depth to this single.

1) Jordin Sparks - Tattoo





(YouTube has disabled the original video's html) BUT you don't have to see it. Just listen to the song and you'll like it. Sparks is the latest winner of American Idol. Although it's regarded as the weakest season yet, it's one of the best pop songs since dunno when. Who says pop has died?

2) Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love





Views: 15,398,454 and counting. That is the counter on the original video on YouTube. Insane? I'd say perfectly normal 'cos this is a really solid single from this new artiste who looks like J Lo but sounds 100 times better. Highly recommended.

3) The Last Goodnight - Pictures of You





A band to watch-out for in 2008. This first single is highly successful here and in the States. Meaningful lyrics and good ol' pop-rock.

4) Santana ft Chad Kroeger - Into the Night





Kick-ass song! The flawless guitars of Santana plus the groove of Nickerlback's charismatic frontman produces a sheer feel-good song. And we sang: "eh-oh-eh-oh-eh-oh-ay.."
I give it WooooW (4.0/5)


5) Mary J Blige - Just Fine




Move aside packaged-newbies like Rihanna and Nicole Scherzinger; the real stuff is back! The queen of R&B struts her stuff even harder and better here. It is so fine.
I give it WOOOoW (3.5/5)


6) OneRepublic - Stop and Stare




Following the crazy-successful hit Apologize with Timbaland earlier, the band itself is back. I think they are much, much better themselves. This song grows on you.

That's all, yup. I need to rush before this bloody thing lags again 'cos of all the YouTube vids. Anw, on saturday, went to The Wine Company @ Dempsey Road with a couple of Lamerz. Drank two bottles of white wine (6 of us). Show you photos next time.

What a FUNNY Weekend =D

Well, I'm at home cos I just came back from physiotherapy. The specialist said I'm bow-legged =X that's why my knees tend to hurt after high-impact or running activities. Tomorrow going MMI (which means one more night stay-out) =X Hees.

Happy 2008 ~

Yup, guys, it's a brraanndd new yearr!

Come to think of it, really don't know what this year will hold for me. All the aspects of my life.. dunno how much they'll change. But these kinda things, you'll never know, right? Just live life the way it is. Live it happily, that's the most important =)

Anyway, I'm sure Lamerz would be looking forward to the photos of New Year's Eve. So here they are!

We went to countdown at the Esplanade; before that, we met up @ Marina Square to do.. shopping. Oh man, I think it's the first time I've ever really shopped with Lamerz. But... the 3 guys did go home with a good deal. So did Szern.. with her $5 cloth.. I mean halter top =P

The 3 guys bought a pair of shoe each from IP Zone.. all costing just $17.40! That is mine. I know it's simple but.. can 配衣服..

Anyway, that's it.. the 8minutes fireworks show was over and they came over to my house. Didn't play mahjong cos alot of us played for the past few days le.. watched Forrest Gump, zhiwei serkun fell asleep. Then after that everyone went to sleep.

They left when I was still asleep.. paiseh, realled K-O-ed. =

Ahh, have to book in tonight. Quite sian. This friday BDS. Quite sian also. But oh wells, it's the new year. Take it easy.

Really can't wait for the end of 2008!!

Then can go on holidays with friends, families, cousins.. learn driving.. oh man.
