Where The Wild Things Are Shunned

It was reported in The Straits Times Life! today that the critically-acclaimed movie based on the beloved book Where The Wild Things Are will not be brought into Singapore because it is rumoured that cinema operators fear the movie might not generate enough profit to cover operational costs.

Take a look at the trailer:

Our artistic preferences are obviously being restricted.

The film is generating positive Oscar buzz in the United States for its whimsy take on a fantasy tale that appeals to both children and adults. Its stirring soundtrack is even nominated for a Golden Globe this year. Doesn't this warrant a re-consideration to bring this movie in?

This is as absurd as the previous ousting of Paul Greengrass' United 93, a powerful movie about the ill-fated airplane during 9/11 that didn't crash into its supposed target in Washington, thanks to the brave passengers on board that fought against the hijackers. There were no survivors. Thankfully I got to catch this great movie on DVD, but not in the cinemas in all its intended glory, because Singapore didn't screen it.

Even though Wild Things is hardly considered an arthouse film, at least consider bringing it into The Cathay's Picturehouse?

Bah! This is sad.

Take care, people. And keep supporting good movies.
